Covalence for December 2015

The Lutheran Alliance for Faith, Science and TechnologyIn our final issue of 2015, we look at philosophical contributions to the religion-and-science dialogue and specifically dive into content from a conference held earlier this year in Europe on the “Genesis of Concepts and Confrontation of Realities.”

This year has been a busy one. It has been filled with well-attended events, fruitful scholarship and renewed energy surrounding key topics related to faith and science. Here’s a brief rundown of this past year’s issues:

In February, Roman Catholic theologian Peter Hess offered up his insights on how Catholicism has approached the faith and science dialogue.

Along with George Murphy, we discovered a potential nominee for a patron saint for science/theology in March.

Then in April, we reviewed a number of recent public surveys on the topic of faith and science that held contradictory findings.

Science’s challenge for doctrinal Christianity was the focus in May, as a two-part essay series was concluded from Lee Lybarger.

The popular biblical story of Joshua and the missing day was the main feature in the June issue of Covalence.

We picked up the theme of mythbusting in July in anticipation of the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit with a popular quiz for youth and adults alike!

Then in September we separated out fact from fiction in the story of Galileo.

In October, Phil Hefner contributed a thoughtful essay on how popular culture’s ambivalence toward science may impact the faith/science dialogue.

Pentecostal scholar Amos Yong in November gave us the Pentecostal response to Christianity and science questions and provided an interesting take on how a diverse denomination perspective can re-shape how the work of religion and science scholarship is done.

Next year promises to build upon 2015’s excitement. We are taking a break in the month of January, but will be back with a new edition in February 2016.

Merry Christmas and have a blessed New Year! And if you are interested in getting others involved in the discussion, give them the gift of Covalence by forwarding on this link to sign up for a free subscription to our newsletter: http://luthscitech.org/covalence-opt-in/
