Governor’s Signature Needed to Become Law

Last week, the NJ Assembly and Senate voted to send two policy priorities to Governor Christie to be signed into law.  The two bills, funding for lead prevention and extension of emergency assistance are critical to our most vulnerable residents, young children and individuals living with special needs.

We urge you to email or call Governor Christie and tell him to protect our children and special needs residents by signing these bills without delay.

  • $10 million appropriation for Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund (LHCAF).  A1378/S996 would restore $10 million to that fund to help families eliminate the lead contamination in their homes.  More than $50 million has been steered into the general treasury since 2009, instead of the LHCAF, as required.  Lead is known to cause permanent neurological damage in children, negatively affects academic performance, and can cause a wide array of learning disabilities and behavioral issues.  3,100 children in the last year alone have been diagnosed with elevated blood lead levels.
  • Extends Emergency Assistance  A/2568/S983 exempts the following people or individuals from the time limits imposed on the emergency assistance program: parent or relative who is providing full-time care for a disabled dependent, person who is permanently disable, person over 60 years of age, or chronically unemployable.
