Globally, an estimated one-in-three women will experience physical, sexual and psychological abuse in their lifetime. Women and girls in developing countries experience particularly high rates of gender-based violence. This global epidemic is fueled by traditions, beliefs, and practices that view women as less than equal to men. On a larger scale, these practices have created entire systems that infringe upon the rights of women. Some of this violence is perpetuated in the form of battery, honor killings, rape, trafficking, and female genital cutting.
In March, a number of Representatives and Senators reintroduced the International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA), which will help prevent violence against women and girls overseas. By increasing legal protections, victims’ access to healthcare, and developing economic and educational opportunities, I-VAWA serves as a critical step for the U.S. to take in order to combat violence against women abroad. Learn more about I-VAWA and the ELCA’s commitment to stopping gender-based violence here.
